Day Support Option
Day Supports
The Day Support Program (DSO) provides stimulating activities for 40 individuals.  Some fantastic opportunities we provide are morning and afternoon social coffee hours, gentle stretching and chair yoga, music and art therapy, current event discussions, bingo, weekly sing along with a professional musician, and a variety of educational and arts & crafts activities.  Individuals also enjoy community experiences through volunteering (e.g. Meals on Wheels), participating at the local senior center, and enjoying leisure-time activities.  Walks at the Torrington Armory or on nature trails, visits to local parks, and other excursions provide socialization and exercise.   Individuals also perform in concerts throughout the year in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Christmas Holiday, and LARC’s Annual Meeting, spreading joy to all in attendance.
  • Community outings during the week:  Meals on Wheels has 2 groups going out every day, delivering to those in need in two locations in two towns, Winsted and Torrington; recycling and shopping trips; picnicking, playing basketball, or relaxing in park; walking on trails; Visual Scavenger Hunts; visiting local monuments and learning about the men and women who served our country; March Farms Corn Maze & pumpkin picking
  • In-door fun activities during the week: Meditation with Young, Music Therapy with Bill, OWT student’s volunteering, Reading Group with Frances; Karaoke with Kate;
  • Party themes throughout the year: Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, St. Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day
  • Educational themes throughout the year (often accompanied by a small party, too): Labor Day, Hispanic Heritage month, Autumnal Equinox, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Winter Solstice, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Groundhog Day, President’s Day, Vernal Equinox, Earth Day, Summer Solstice
  • Gardening pursuits with input from local nurseries and farms
Giving back to the Community
  • In addition to Meals on Wheels, DSO individuals helped others by:
    • Bringing Dog Biscuits to the dog pound
    • Donating clothing and other items to the homeless shelter
    • Donating food to the soup kitchen
    • Donating stuffed animals to the State Police.  The stuffed animals are used at accident scenes to aid in the comfort of children.
