CAMP
LARC
A
Very Successful Program for Campers with Disabilities.
Over 35 Years of Experience.
For over 35 years, Camp LARC has earned high regard as a model for inclusive
camp programming. Camp LARC will be operating in conjunction with the Northwest
YMCA/Camp TORYMCA at the site of Camp Maria Pratt. At Camp LARC/ Camp TORYMCA, all campers are included in all activities. Camp LARC/Camp TORYMCA strives to build a camp community that celebrates
diversity and fosters an understanding of our similarities and differences.
CAMP SITE
This
summer, Camp
LARC/Camp TORYMCA will be
operating at the site of Camp Maria Pratt, just six miles from the center of Torrington. Camp Maria Pratt is the ideal location for Camp LARC/ Camp TORYMCA, with over 325
acres of beautiful woods and fields, a private pond, miles of marked trails, and lots of
wildlife. In addition to the natural wonders,
we have a swimming area, boating and fishing docks, volleyball and basketball courts, low
ropes course, a playing field, unit sites and indoor facilities for rainy day activities.
PROGRAM
Individuals with developmental
disabilities.
Ages 4 years old to 21 years old.
Campers with the Camp LAR C program are
INCLUDED in all areas of the Camp TORYMCA Program. At Camp LARC/Camp
TORYMCA, children do more than learn a game or sport. Campers become a
part of a community of children and counselors. They learn
responsibility, cooperation and respect, as they become important
members of the Camp TORYMCA family.
Activities for the youngest campers are
designed to meet their special needs and interests. They learn the
importance of friendships and relationships through swim lessons,
crafts, nature and sports.
Our older campers have the opportunity
to learn new skills, experience new challenges, make new friends and
renew old friendships. Campers pick the different activities which they
would like to participate in. Some of the activities offered
include...SWIMMING, BOATING, FIELD SPORTS, ARTS & CRAFTS, ARCHERY, NATURE
& LOWER ROPES COURSE.
COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM
(15 Years Old and Up)
The four-week course is designed to
place participants in leadership roles under the guidance of camp
staff. Information and applications are available by calling Katherine
Marchand-Beyer at 482-9364 ext. 37
All program areas are designed to
encourage personal growth and skill development in a safe, secure
environment.
HEALTH AND
SAFETY AT CAMP LARC/CAMP
TORYMCA
All campers must have a physical
examination during the past 12 months.
The camp has full-time health care
personnel on site at all times. The health care personnel screens all
medical forms, works closely with staff to ensure safe programs and
practices, administers first aid, and can dispense medication as
prescribed by a doctor.
Our waterfront area has an H-shaped
dock with deep-end lane markers creating a secure swimming area. All
lessons and recreational swims are under the supervision of certified
staff. Our boating program follows strict safety regulations directed by
fully certified staff.
